Mother and baby cruising just below the surface. The babies are born on average 10 to 15 feet in length and weighing from 1 to 2 tons.
The rule of thumb is to stay 100 yards away, but the whales don’t know that rule. Many times we will just be drifting and the whales will surface right next to the boat. It is always nice to be on a boat with no more than 6 guests. Most other whale watching companies fill the boat to the gills with people (30 to 60 passengers). Most of our trips are private charters and cost about the same as the other boats. The main point is that you will always have a good view on Makani Kai 2 very spacious 40 foot catamaran. Why fight the crowd when you can have a more intimate experience.

The kohala coast seems to be the best area on the BIG ISLAND due to it’s shallow waters compared to kona. Captain B. has a skill for finding these creatures when other boats seem to be on a wild goose chase. Of course sometimes the whales are right outside the breakwall as we leave the harbor in Kawaihae. The Captain will always give you extra time if needed to give you a great whale watching tour!
